The Association of American Geographers has produced a 15-volume edition of a definitive encyclopedia of Geography. This undertaking had 6 Core Editors each working with 6-8 Subject Matter Section Editors. I was the section editor for Social Geography and responsible for commissioning over 50 entries as well as writing four entries. As of April 2022 I am one of 12 Associate Editors working on the Encyclopedia.
Jan 2002 - Apr 2008 Gender, Place and Culture: A Journal of Feminist Geography, Managing Editor
Although the editorial responsibilities were split between four people, the journal has a tradition of only one editor taking on the responsibilities of being the Managing Editor. In this capacity, the responsibility was dealing with publishers, Taylor and Francis, liaising with the book review editors and ensuring that there was enough copy to go into each number of the journal. There were four a year, increased to six. Sent off material to the publishers, including book reviews and Spanish abstracts and made substantial changes to the editorial board to make it more inclusive of women of colour and women outside Europe and North America, as well as introducing the practice of having abstracts in both English and Spanish. Finally, the journal sponsors an annual lecture, The GPC Jan Monk Distinguished Annual Lecture, and an annual $1,000 USD award for new and emerging scholars. The publishers have now acquired ISI inclusion for the journal. Also, I employed a postgraduate student to work as editorial assistant on the journal. Upon leaving this post the journal was in the top ten T&F journals (in a total of over 1,100 journals) in terms of electronic hits and downloads.
